Trademark registration is set to be transformed as Singapore introduces the world’s first mobile app for trademark registration. Developed by the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS), the app – IPOS Go – will allow businesses and entrepreneurs seeking trademark protection in Singapore to file their trademarks directly with IPOS via their mobile devices.

The app offers a simplified user interface and features that create a seamless and fuss-free application experience, making it easier and faster for business owners to submit their applications. Filing a trademark on IPOS Go can now be finished in less than 10 minutes, from the current average of 45 to 60 minutes. Filing costs will also be significantly reduced as applicants may feel more confident in filing their applications directly with IPOS.

Trademarks have become critical to business success and the world continues to see a surge in trademarks filings.[1] In Singapore, trademark applications have increased by 30% over the last 5 years. The speed and ease of filing will benefit the increasing number of enterprises and entrepreneurs who need a good branding strategy to differentiate themselves from their competitors. Applicants can also track their registration status, be notified of important updates, or file for trademark renewals via the app, on-the-go.

IPOS Go reflects IPOS’ commitment to advance Singapore’s Smart Nation agenda by offering digital innovations that will serve citizens and businesses better. The app further integrates AI technology to enhance searches for similar trademarks on the IPOS register, which can prevent applicants from filings for trademarks that are too similar to existing ones. This new feature is essential as more than forty percent of the world’s trademarks filed today contain images. As the world continues to see a surge in trademarks filings, the new AI capability will help business owners better manage their brands.

Isabelle Tan, Director, Registry of Trademarks, IPOS, said: “Trademarks are the meat and potatoes of the IP world. They communicate the emotional and reputational attributes of every enterprise, creating a differentiating identity in an increasingly crowded marketplace. Everyone deals with trademarks daily, and the trademark system is crucial in the protection and monetisation of that distinctive identity. Given the widespread use of smartphones for transactions today, theIPOS Go mobile app is just a fingertip away for businesses and entrepreneurs to protect their trademarks, build consumer loyalty, and ultimately generate and increase revenue for the company.”

The app is available now on the Apple App store and Google Play store.
