Reasons Why Defensive Driving Is A Must

Being involved in a motor accident can be an extremely stressful time. Not only are you likely to have damaged your vehicle, but you could also be badly injured or in shock and this could result in lengthy hospital stays and even prolonged periods away from work. All this means potentially toxic battles with insurance companies and lawyers just to receive the compensation that you are rightly due.

Surely, though, it would be much better to try and avoid an accident in the first place by learning to drive in a safer and more defensive manner? Obviously, you will not be able to do anything about the way that other road users drive, but by getting your own house in order you will be cutting the odds of having a serious accident. If you would like to learn more, then read on, as we are going to take a look at the reasons why defensive driving is a must.

You Become More Aware

Being alert whilst driving is fundamental if you want to avoid an accident and for this reason, it is illegal to drive whilst being impaired by alcohol or non-prescription drugs. Learning to drive defensively ensures that you become more aware of the dangers around you. You will understand when to reduce speed according to the road conditions and when it is necessary to proceed cautiously. Instead of driving tail to bumper with a car in front, you will learn to keep a breaking distance apart, lessening the chances of a shunt from behind. Furthermore, you will learn how to cope with your vehicle if it becomes disabled when driving so that you do not put other road users at risk. Effectively, what you are doing when learning to drive defensively is putting other road users first, learning to drive in all conditions, and increasing your awareness of events going on around you, so that you can be as safe as possible on the road.

Driving Will Become Cheaper

It is a legal requirement that all road users must have insurance for their vehicle and this insurance can be extremely expensive depending on the type of car that you are driving and your personal history. If you have been involved in many accidents, whether or not they are your fault, you are going to see your insurance premiums increase greatly. This is because the insurer will see you as a higher risk person, much more likely to have an accident, and they will therefore charge you a higher premium accordingly. The best way to mitigate against this is to learn to drive defensively because you will become a better all-around driver, far less likely to have an accident and you will be charged lower premiums. So, not only will you save money in your pocket, but you will also decrease the chances of having a serious accident. This seems like a win-win situation to me!

You Will Save Yourself Stress and Emotional Problems

When you are involved in an accident, it can be an incredibly stressful time for all involved. Your loved ones will be left worried that you may not recover from your injuries and emotionally you may be too scared to get behind the wheel of your vehicle again. Pursuing others for damages as a result of a car accident can really take its toll because opposition insurance companies will want to pay out as little as possible and if you result to the courts to sue somebody personally, you run the risk of being tied up in legal battles for years to come, that you may have little chance of winning. All of this could have been avoided if you had just taken the time to learn how to drive more defensively, thus decreasing your chances of being involved in a serious accident. Give your family and friends peace of mind that when you are on the road they know what you will be doing all you can to drive safely, and they will then be able to sleep soundly at night.

As we have learned that driving defensively is extremely important if you want to be safe on the road, aware of others around you, and less likely to have an accident. You will also find that driving becomes cheaper as your insurance premiums will be lower than if you had several accidents on your record.

Giving your loved one’s peace of mind is also vital, especially if you drive for a living as they will know that you have reduced your chances of being in an accident. So, if you have never learned to drive defensively, now is the time and hopefully, you will remain accident-free for years to come.
