Being Kind To Yourself Is Now Important More Than Ever: Tips That Will Help

The year 2020 has brought many changes, both good and bad, into our lives. While some people are still thriving despite the circumstances it enforced, others have unfortunately cracked under the pressure. Whether you are dealing with a diagnosed mental illness like anxiety or depression or you are just feeling a bit under the weather, adopting a gentler approach with yourself may help mitigate your negative feelings. Since this is easier said than done for many, you might need some tips to kickstart your self-growth journey.

Read on to know how you can be kinder to yourself.

Get Some “Me Time”

It can be challenging to get some time to yourself when you are swamped with work and family responsibilities. Yet, failing to do so will only make you feel more emotionally drained. You may think that you are doing yourself a favor by throwing yourself at work to stay busy, but there will be a time when you will be running on an empty tank and in desperate need of a break. By finding ways to carve out some private time, you will certainly feel refreshed and more productive, not to mention emotionally stable. So, the first step to being kinder to yourself is to give it what it needs to recover, time. It may seem like a small thing to do, but it can actually do wonders.

Seek Professional Help

Some days are just better than others, but if you feel that it keeps getting worse for you, then it might be time to consult a professional. You’d be surprised how many people do not know that they are suffering from a crippling mental illness until it is too late. If you are depressed or plagued with suicidal thoughts, the psychiatrists at https://www.thrivetalk.com/online-psychiatrist/ recommend that you give therapy a try. Talking to a professional may also help even if you are not suffering from any mental illness. Doing so can help you get some much-needed emotional clarity and put you on the right track.

Celebrate Accomplishments and Failures

Our modern society has made us think that celebrating our accomplishments is a waste of time. Instead, we’ve been led to believe that whenever we achieve one of our goals, we should immediately work on attaining the next one. However, this is why we always feel like we do not have enough time to do anything! Celebrating accomplishments and embracing failures, on the other hand, allow you to break this vicious circle. Yes, you’ve read that right; even failures deserve to be celebrated. They might seem catastrophic at the moment, but in the grander scheme of things, they are opportunities for growth. Being too hard on yourself does not solve anything. On the contrary, it can lead to self-loathing and a sense of unworthiness, which are things you certainly want to avoid at all costs.

Surround Yourself with Good Friends

Sometimes, the people closest to us feed our negative feelings. Although cutting off those people from your life may seem hard at first, you will be doing yourself a favor. To be kinder to yourself, you do not only have to change your mentality, but you should also weed out the nay-sayers. Surrounding yourself with a tight-knit group of positive individuals will encourage you to grow and thrive as a person. So, don’t settle for less than what you deserve!

Shush Your Inner Perfectionist

Don’t let that nagging inner voice dictate how your life should be! While striving to do the best you can is a healthy approach, trying to do everything perfectly is simply an exercise in futility. You will never be able to reach that level, and that is totally ok. We are humans, and flaws are a part of our nature. Beating yourself over the fact that you are “not good enough” only perpetuates your negative thoughts. This does not mean you should not work on your flaws, but it simply means that it is okay to slip up every once in a while. Of course, you may not be able to get rid of your inner perfectionist completely. Nonetheless, you should acknowledge the presence of that inner voice and learn to ignore its yammering.

Practicing self-care and maintaining your mental health may not come easily to you at first. Yet, like everything, it comes with practice. By learning to respect your boundaries and nourishing yourself with positive affirmation, you can overcome your negative thoughts and be kinder to yourself. It might take some time, but it is definitely worth it. If it gets too much, you can always consult a psychiatrist to sort out your emotions and get expert help.
