More smart Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) will be set up across the island from 30 June 2020 under the Recycle N Save initiative, offering a wider range of non- monetary rewards to households when they recycle their empty plastic drink bottles and aluminium drink cans at the smart RVMs. The RVM programme, part of the Recycle N Save initiative started by F&N Foods and the National Environment Agency (NEA), will be supported by four new partners, CapitaLand, Sport Singapore, Sentosa Development Corporation and Anywheel. In the true spirit of environmental stewardship, users can also choose not to receive any rewards at most of the newer RVM locations. These include 5 RVMs deployed in our primary and secondary schools since March 2020 to inculcate recycling habits from a young age, where no rewards will be dispensed.

Since the launch of the Recycle N Save initiative in October 2019, over 2.4 million plastic drink bottles and aluminium drink cans have been collected through the 15 RVMs that have been rolled out thus far. Through this initiative, NEA and F&N hope to encourage everyone in Singapore to recycle more and recycle right.

Wider Array of Rewards

Under the new Multi-Reward Scheme, there will be more rewards to choose from. The rewards include:

a) STAR$ which can be redeemed for eCapitaVouchers and eDeals on the CapitaStar App and used for shopping and dining across CapitaLand malls (as well as eCapitaMall and Capita3Eats in Q4 2020),

b) ActiveSG credits which can be used at all ActiveSG facilities,

c) Sentosa Fun Pass Tokens which can be exchanged for attraction passes, souvenirs or food and drinks at participating merchants on Sentosa, and

d) Free rides on Anywheel bicycles.

Users will be able to choose their preferred reward for every 10 empty plastic drink bottles or aluminium drink cans that are deposited at these Multi-Reward RVMs. In response to feedback from members of the public that they recycle to protect the environment, and not for rewards, the public can also opt to recycle any number of empty plastic drink bottles and aluminium drink cans at the Multi-Reward RVMs without redeeming any of the rewards on offer.

These new Multi-Reward RVMs will mainly be sited at the reward partners’ locations, such as at CapitaLand malls, Sport Singapore facilities and Sentosa. Of the 50 RVMs which will be deployed across Singapore, 16 RVMs will continue to be Single-Reward RVMs that offer users a $0.20 FairPrice discount coupon for every 20 containers deposited. RVM School Education Programme

To inculcate recycling habits from a young age, F&N and NEA also introduced the RVM School Education Programme under the Recycle N Save initiative in March 2020. In the first run, RVMs were placed in five primary and secondary schools, and they will remain there for a period of six months. Students are encouraged to proactively collect empty plastic drink bottles and aluminium drink cans, and deposit them into the RVMs at their schools. The schools will also be organising their own environmental education activities to tie in with the placement of these RVMs, which will not dispense any rewards. NEA hopes to build on the growing momentum towards recycling to reach out to more households in Singapore and to make recycling more convenient for the public. NEA will continue to work with partners and stakeholders to encourage the public to recycle and to build a more sustainable Singapore. This is one of the many initiatives that will help us to achieve our Sustainable Singapore Blueprint’s goal to increase our national recycling rate to 70 per cent by 2030, and to reduce the amount of waste per capita sent to landfill by 30 per cent by 2030 set under the Zero Waste Masterplan.

ANNEX B

RVM School Education Programme (under the Recycle N Save Initiative)

a. To inculcate recycling habits from a young age, NEA and F&N have launched the RVM School Education Programme, under the Recycle N Save initiative, in March 2020. In the first run five RVMs were placed in primary and secondary schools for a period of six months. Students are encouraged to practice proper recycling habits at home, by setting aside empty plastic drink bottles and aluminium drink cans for recycling and rinsing the drink containers before depositing them in their schools’ RVMs.

b. Each school is carrying out an intra-school recycling competition to drive healthy competition among the different levels and classes. The activities organised by the schools are aimed at encouraging the practice of the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) among the students. Schools can tap on NEA’s Environment Fund for Schools to support these activities.

c. It is hoped that the RVM School Education Programme will help spark students’ interests in sustainability and the national movement towards becoming a Zero Waste Nation, as well as inspire them to embark on their own environmental journey.
