M1 Limited (M1) and Singapore Innovate Pte. Ltd. (SGInnovate) announced that they will be embarking on a collaboration that will help start-ups use 5G technology for their products and solutions.

This memorandum of understanding (MOU) between M1 and SGInnovate aims to connect start-ups with potential corporate partners, provide technical support, and promote 5G capabilities. M1 will identify potential corporate partners who are keen to explore the benefits of certain 5G use cases for their business, while SGInnovate will identify and focus primarily on Singapore-based start-ups, as well as international start-ups where relevant, and match them to relevant 5G use cases for B2C or B2B2C solutions.

Dr Lim Jui, Chief Executive Officer of SGInnovate said, “From enabling the full potential of autonomous technology and immersive mixed reality applications to expanding the power of remote patient monitoring and more, 5G technology will unlock a digital future with endless new possibilities for both consumers and industries. We are excited to work closely with M1 and the deep tech start-up ecosystem to further breakthroughs in innovation and discover new use cases of 5G.”

“M1 is excited to partner with SGInnovate to bring the benefits of 5G to start-ups. The start-up community plays a key role in fuelling Singapore’s economic growth and transformation, and we look forward to leveraging our 5G expertise to help them drive innovation. Moving forward, 5G will be the backbone of Singapore’s digital economy, reinforcing its position as the region’s technology and connectivity hub. As one of the key telecommunications players to receive the nationwide 5G licence, we are excited to explore the many ways we can leverage this technology to maximise the benefits for Singaporean consumers and businesses,” said Mr Manjot Singh Mann, Chief Executive Officer, M1.

The collaboration is expected to benefit start-ups with a Proof-of-Concept or commercially ready products and spark innovative applications, such as real-time health monitoring, remote diagnosis and consultation for healthcare, immersive learning for education and mixed reality (MR) applications for project management.
An example of such an application in healthcare would be patients who are required to wear electrocardiogram (ECG) rhythm monitoring devices. The device will be paired to a phone via Bluetooth, which will then send signals directly to a cloud server database. This allows doctors to view the incoming information for them to analyse, form a diagnosis and create reports for patients.

With 5G technology, this will significantly improve the speed of data transfer with its ultra-fast latency and high-speed connectivity. These precious seconds saved could be the difference to saving a person’s life.

M1 will also provide the 5G testbed that will help start-ups accelerate the adoption of 5G technology into their use cases and real-life test scenarios. Selected start-ups will work closely with M1’s in-house engineers and deep-dive into the development, testing and application of 5G technology for their products or solutions, depending on the various requirements. This will allow M1 to continue building its technical competency in 5G system deployment while catering to specific requirements for different use-cases.

Through their collective expertise, M1 and SGInnovate are setting out to create knowledge-sharing and community-building opportunities, such as roundtables and innovation challenges within the start-up ecosystem, focusing on the potential and benefits of 5G technology. This will provide start-ups greater exposure and create opportunities for them to join SGInnovate’s deep tech community.

M1 and SGInnovate are also exploring further opportunities for start-ups to be connected to the broader deep tech ecosystem players, share about their innovative solutions, and to be updated on the latest and upcoming 5G trends.
