In the spirit of Deepavali to celebrate the gift of giving to the community, NTUC FairPrice (FairPrice) has announced today that it will donate $20,000, through its charity arm FairPrice Foundation, to the Singapore Indian Development Association (SINDA) to support the educational needs of their beneficiaries.

Mr Seah Kian Peng, Group CEO of FairPrice Group, said, “FairPrice celebrates Deepavali with our Hindu community by fostering the spirit of light and of giving that the occasion signifies. Through our donation to SINDA, we hope to alleviate the expenses of its beneficiaries, so that students can continue to pursue and achieve their academic goals and dreams.”

The event, held at FairPrice @ Tekka Place, was graced by Mr S Iswaran, Minister for Transport & Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations who witnessed the presentation of the cheque from Mr Seah to Mr Anbarasu Rajendran, CEO of SINDA. To kick off the launch of the FairPrice Deepavali campaign, Mr Iswaran was invited to participate in the lighting of a traditional Indian lamp used to represent lighting up of lives of children from low-income families under SINDA this Deepavali.

The presentation preceded with a guided tour inside FairPrice supermarket, where the guests of honour were shown a wide selection of food commonly enjoyed in Indian cuisine. They include recipe ingredients, tasty snacks and pre-prepared meals, across a range of fresh vegetables, frozen foods, traditional meals, UHT milk and FairPrice exclusive cookies made for Deepavali.

Since 2011, FairPrice Foundation has donated over $280,000 to SINDA, including this year’s giving. The donation will benefit children who are currently receiving social and financial aid from SINDA and is just one part of many charity efforts realised by FairPrice.

In 2008, FairPrice’s charity arm, FairPrice Foundation, was launched with the aim to improve lives in the community. Over the last 12 years, FairPrice has disbursed more than $158 million to the community through FairPrice Foundation, along with other do good initiatives and volunteerism work, hoping that efforts such as these will continue to foster a spirit of giving within the community.
