Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) has maintained its standing among the top echelons of the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings.
NTU is ranked 13th internationally, and achieved its highest position in citations per faculty, an indicator of its research impact, soaring 11 places to rank 25th.
The latest QS World University Rankings results reaffirm NTU’s established strengths across engineering, science, business, education, the arts and social sciences that generate new ideas and talents to fuel Singapore’s economy and innovation system. Credit for NTU’s continued good performance goes to its professors for their dedication in educating students and for their world-class research that has strengthened the University’s global reputation.
NTU today is a talent magnet, attracting some of the world’s best scientists, promising up-and-coming investigators and the brightest young talents.
As one of Singapore’s top research institutes, NTU in recent years has emerged as a global leader in driving the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which is defined by disruptive technologies such as the Internet of Things, robotics, machine learning, virtual reality and artificial intelligence.
The NTU Smart Campus is a living testbed of cutting-edge technologies with established joint labs with top industry partners such as BMW, Delta Electronics, Rolls Royce, Singtel, and Volvo Buses.
In particular, NTU is recognised for its strengths in digital technologies that address the evolving needs of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. This has attracted the world’s technology giants such as HP Inc. and Alibaba to collaborate with NTU in areas such as digital manufacturing, 3D printing and artificial intelligence.
For example, in NTU’s corporate lab in partnership with global technology leader HP Inc., more than 60 scientists, researchers and engineers are tackling some of the key challenges in the world of digital manufacturing, from 3D printing, cybersecurity and new applications to the impact of artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Earlier this week, NTU announced a fresh collaboration with Facebook to launch a pilot programme to offer specialist certificates and graduate certificate programmes to train and develop local data centre talent.

Young university making big strides

Ranked No. 1 amongst the world’s best young universities by QS in the last six years, NTU has been growing from strength to strength in various global indices each year. NTU debuted at second place in the Nature Index’s ranking of the world’s leading young universities (aged 50 and under) last year, another indicator of its global research impact.
Last year, NTU climbed 6 places to No.43 and took the top 5 spots in five subjects in the US News & World Report’s Best Global Universities Rankings. NTU retained its global No.1 position in Materials Science for the third consecutive year, and No.2 in Computer Science for the second year running. NTU’s Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Chemistry took the No.4 spot, while Engineering kept its global No.5 position.
Released annually, the QS World University Rankings assess the world’s top 1,000 universities on six performance indicators relating to research, teaching, employability and internationalisation.
